What did the future of the Jewish homeland look like in the eyes of the Jewish artists?
How did young Jewish painters, sculptors, and illustrators from Europe imagine a state that didn’t yet exist in the first half of the 20th century?
How the new artistic symbols and a visual language for a state yet to be born were created?
Join me for a fascinating journey into the world of Jewish artists who shaped the visual identity of modern Israel before it even became a reality.
From the iconic, dreamlike works of Marc Chagall to the striking, Zionist-inspired prints of Ephraim Moshe Lilien, these visionaries used their talent to bring the Jewish national dream to life.
February 24, Monday Part I – Art, Identity, and the Early Visionaries
At first, we’ll explore the origins of a Jewish artistic movement that sought to define the visual language of a future Jewish state. We'll look at the works of artists who used their canvases, sculptures, and prints to shape the evolving idea of a homeland.
We’ll discover the story of the legendary Bezalel Academy, founded in Jerusalem by Boris Schatz, where Jewish artists worked to create a new artistic language — one that blended Jewish heritage with the landscapes, symbols, and spirit of the land and the state of Israel.
February 26, Wednesday Part II – Building a Nation Through Art
Now we'll focus on the artists who captured the birth and transformation of Israel through their work.
You’ll meet painters like Nahum Gutman, who documented the rise of Tel Aviv from sand dunes to a thriving city, and Abel Pann, whose powerful depictions of biblical scenes and early Zionist pioneers helped shape the imagery of a renewed Jewish presence in the land of Israel. We’ll explore how these and other artists helped define the artistic foundations of a young nation.
This is not just art history — it’s a story of passion, hope, and creativity. The story of Jewish artists who painted, sculpted, and designed with the dream of a Jewish homeland in their hearts.
Join me for this inspiring two-part series — let’s explore this incredible artistic journey together!
