We go to Paris - a city full of wonders, and even more so when seen through Jewish eyes!
Let’s walk into two of its most iconic museums - The Louvre and the Pompidou Art Center - but not in the usual way. I want to show you the details most visitors never notice, the layers of Jewish history and meaning hidden in plain sight.
We’ll start with something truly extraordinary: the ancient stele, the earliest known inscription of Israel carved in stone. From there, we’ll trace Jewish echoes in the paintings of the Old Masters, and talk about how the history of Parisian Jews is interwoven with the very story of the Louvre itself.
Then we’ll turn to the 20th century: Marc Chagall, Chaïm Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani and others… names you know, but I’ll show you their art in a new light as deeply Jewish voices of modern art, speaking from the heart of Paris.
This two-part virtual tour is full of images, stories, and discoveries. I’ll be your private Jewish guide, leading you through Paris’ museums as living spaces where history, creativity, and Jewish identity meet.
September 15, Monday Part I. The Louvre: Jewish Roots and Hidden Symbols
Our plan is to see some unique artifacts of the ancient art department; discover Jewish symbols and figures hidden in the works of European Old Masters; learn how the Louvre’s collection influenced Jewish artists and the rise of modern Jewish art and discuss the legacy of Parisian Jews through the history of the Louvre itself.
The Louvre will come alive not just as a palace of art, but as a place deeply connected to Jewish heritage.
September 17, Wednesday Part II. The Pompidou Center: Jewish Voices in Modern Art
Now it's time to turn from tradition to modernity and look at the world of 20th-century Jewish creativity. Together we will explore the works of Marc Chagall, Chaïm Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani, and other Jewish artists exhibited in Paris who transformed modern art; understand how their Jewish identity shaped their artistic language and imagery and discover the struggles, resilience, and brilliance that gave Jewish art a unique voice in the heart of modern Paris.
This part is a vivid journey into art, memory, and the Jewish soul of the 20th century.
