Join me for a two-part virtual journey through Madrid’s Golden Triangle of Art - the world-renowned Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection.
As we explore some of Europe’s most celebrated masterpieces, I’ll guide you through a lesser-told narrative: the hidden Jewish presence within the most iconic art works.
We’ll move beyond traditional art history to uncover Jewish figures, themes, and symbolism - sometimes overt, sometimes obscured.
We’ll discuss how artists reflected, distorted, or ignored Jewish identity throughout the centuries, and how the experience of Jewish conversos left traces in unexpected places.
From Biblical allegories to modernist dreams, this is a journey through art that reveals centuries of Jewish resilience, transformation, and expression.
July 7th, Monday Part I: The Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza – Jewish Echoes in Classical European Art
In the first session, we’ll explore the rich classical collections of the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza, discovering Jewish stories hidden in the works of Bosch, Velázquez, Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya, Dürer, and others.
We’ll examine how Jews were depicted - from reverence to hostility - and how social attitudes and religious tensions shaped their visual presence.
We’ll also touch on the secret world of Jewish conversos, and how their identities were both suppressed and subtly revealed in the cultural fabric of the time.
July 14th, Monday Part II: Jewish Voices in Modern and Contemporary Art
In the second session, we’ll step into the world of modern and contemporary art at the Reina Sofía and continue with highlights from the modern collections of the Thyssen.
We’ll look at Picasso’s Guernica through a lens of displacement and trauma, and explore how Marc Chagall and other Jewish artists gave visual form to Jewish memory, mysticism, and modern identity.
We’ll also meet powerful 20th- and 21st-century Jewish creators who reclaimed agency in the art world - no longer seen, but seeing.
